Kimberly Akimbo is a darkly funny and heartrending comedy. Set in 1999, it centers around a sixteen-year-old girl suffering from a disease that causes her body to age nearly five times faster than it should. Kimberly is navigating life with a colorful family that includes her pregnant hypochondriac mother, a rarely sober father, and a scam-artist aunt.  Meanwhile, she wrestles with her own mortality, and the awkward possibility of first love.

KIMBERLY LEVACO (F, 60+ to play 16): Kimberly is sixteen but appears much older because of a rare aging disorder. She’s thoughtful, perceptive, and usually wiser than the adults around her. Kimberly often feels lonely and longs for normal teenage experiences, but that longing is tempered by the knowledge that her time is limited. The actor needs to honestly capture the emotional energy and occasional awkwardness of a teenager while staying connected to her mature presence. This character shares a brief on-stage kiss with Jeff.
BUDDY LEVACO (M, Mid 30s-40s): Kimberly’s dad is a blue-collar man with a gentle heart and a weak backbone. He drinks too much and uses humor to hide his sense of failure. He wants to do right by his family and his love for Kimberly is genuine, but he lacks the maturity to make lasting changes despite his best efforts.
PATTIE LEVACO (F, Mid 30s – 40s): Kimberly’s mom is eight months pregnant and very clumsy. She’s high-strung, self-centered, and is constantly recording things for her future second child. Actress must have excellent comedic timing. She has bandages wrapped around both hands and walks with crutches for several scenes.
DEBRA (F, Mid 30s – 40s): Pattie’s sister and Kimberly’s aunt. Debra is a brash and sassy broad- funny, and always scheming for her next con. As the most straight-shooting character, she’s both comic relief and a surprising source of heart.
JEFF (M, 18 – 25 to play 16): A classmate of Kimberly’s. Jeff is a misfit himself, though intelligent, quirky, and endearingly awkward. A bit of a nerd, he shares Kimberly’s sense of humor and becomes her closest friend. His presence gives her a glimpse of a normal teenage experience. This character shares a brief on-stage kiss with Kimberly.
